School policy prohibits the use, possession, sale, or distribution of any alcohol, tobacco, controlled substance, imitation controlled substance, or drug paraphernalia at the school, at any school-sponsored activity, or in any vehicle used by the school to transport students to or from an activity during any time of the day or night. All alchohol, tobaccao, vaping and drug paraphernalia confiscated by the school will be destroyed. A three-strike policy will maintain with respect to violation of this rule:
• First Offence: First offence is a letter on file. Parents will be informed of the incident and advised as to the consequences for second offence.
• Second Offence: Second smoking/drinking violation WILL BE ASSIGNED A THREE DAY SUSPENSION.
• Third Offence: Third smoking/drinking violation WILL BE ASSIGNED A ONE WEEK SUSPENSION.
• Fourth Offense: Students will be removed from school for the REMAINDER OF THE SEMESTER and will be withdrawn from courses.
Students registered at LOISS are expected to attend school and be on time for all scheduled classes. Parents are expected to support the school in these matters by ensuring that their son/daughter is in attendance and on time. We believe at LOISS that regular attendance is a prerequisite to enable learners to develop their individual potential and to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to contribute to a healthy society. Absenteeism interferes with teachers’ assessment of student learning. Students are responsible for completing the course requirements when they are absent. Student’s attendance records contribute to the student’s Progress Report and transcript.
➢ Absences and Personal and Sick Leave
The student who has to be excused from the school for any personal, sick or family reasons must be excused by their parents. The parent needs to contact the homeroom teacher PRIOR to the beginning of class to inform them of the absence. Homeroom teachers should be informed of the expected length of the absence and the reason for the absence. Extended absences that are known in advance should be pre-approved with the homeroom teacher and Principal. Students will not be excused from work missed and will need to make it up on their own time.
➢ Absence
Absences will under most conditions, be considered unexcused when prior approval has not been obtained from the school administration. If a student will be absent from class or arrive late to school, the student’s parent or guardian must submit the signed Absentee/Tardiness Form to the school.
Unexcused absence consequences may include, but are not limited to, parental conference, probation and expulsion. If the lost credit was a required course, it is the responsibility of the student to make it up in order to fulfill their graduation requirements.
Maintaining good attendance in school is best fostered when parents support the school and require their children to attend regularly.
Any work missed due to an absence is the responsibility of the student to make up. Any work, including quizzes and tests, missed by the student due to an unexcused absence results in a zero.
Bullying and cyber-bullying are prohibited. Bullying is defined as the repeated use of a written, verbal or electronic expression or a physical act or gesture or any combination which is directed at a victim and: (i) causes physical or emotional harm to the victim or damage to the victim's property; (ii) places the victim in reasonable fear of harm to self or of damage to property; (iii) creates a hostile environment at school for the victim; (iv) infringes on the rights of the victim at school; or (v) materially and substantially disrupts the education process or the orderly operation of a school. For the purposes of this policy, bullying shall include cyber-bullying. Cyber-bullying is the use of technology or any electronic communication, which shall include, but shall not be limited to, any transfer of signs, signals, writing, images, sounds, data or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic, photo electronic or photo optical system, including, but not limited to, electronic mail, internet communications, instant messages or facsimile communications. Cyber-bullying shall also include (i) the creation of a web page or blog in which the creator assumes the identity of another person or (ii) the knowing impersonation of another person as the author of posted content or messages, if the creation or impersonation creates any of the conditions enumerated in clauses (i) to (v), inclusive, of the definition of bullying. Cyber-bullying shall also include the distribution by electronic means of a communication to more than one person or the posting of material on an electronic medium that may be accessed by one or more persons, if the distribution or posting creates any of the conditions enumerated above in clauses (i) to (v).
Possible consequences include suspension, expulsion and parent conferences.
Students must receive prior consent from LOISS staff prior to bringing a drone on campus. The drone will be held by the homeroom teacher and may only be flown in designated areas and only under the direct supervision of a LOISS staff member. Failure to follow these rules will result in the loss of all drone privileges.
Cheating and Plagiarism:
Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated at LOISS. Any student who is found to have committed plagiarism will receive a mark of zero on their work. A make-up assignment will be at the discretion of their teacher. Students who copy work from the internet, a book, another student, or other medium will be considered in violation of this policy. In addition, students who allow their work to be copied by another student will also be subjected to the consequences of cheating.
Students who are caught cheating will have a meeting with the principal and parents will be notified. Consequences for cheating, and measures to curb the action, will be determined by the principal.
At the beginning of each semester, students will sign out textbooks which are to be returned at the end of each semester. Each student is responsible for the safe care and handling of these textbooks. If a student damages or loses a textbook, he or she will be charged a fee for the lost book. The charge for the lost textbook will be based on the current replacement cost of the book plus an additional cost to cover shipping fees. Students must return or pay for the lost book before report cards will be released.
Students are obligated to create a safe, clean, comfortable, and quiet dormitory environment. The rules of the host school must be respected and followed at all times. Dormitory rooms will be inspected at the discretion of the host school. Students with untidy dorms will be sent back to their dormitory during BC class time to tidy it up and will only return to class once it has been inspected and confirmed as tidy. Disobeying any rules of the dormitory and/or host school may result in the canceling of accommodation privileges.
